The District of Barriere will be keeping a ban on campfires in place through the Labour Day long weekend.
That is as the BC Wildfire Service is set to lift the ban across the Kamloops Fire Centre at noon on Friday, Sept. 2.
“We may re-look it after the long weekend,” the District said, in a statement.
The District of Clearwater and the City of Merritt will lift their campfire bans on Friday, while Armstrong and Spallumcheen will ease restrictions at noon on Labour Day Monday, Sept. 5.
“As always, campfires are not allowed anywhere, at anytime, inside City of Kamloops boundaries,” Kamloops Fire and Rescue said Thursday.
At this time, it is unclear on what the status of the campfire ban is in places like Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Chase, and Logan Lake.
Existing bans on larger fires as well as the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels, burn cages, and binary exploding targets will remain in place. Those restrictions are currently not set to be lifted until Oct. 15 – after the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Violators could be issued a ticket for $1,150, and be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000. If convicted in court, people could be also be fined up to $100,000, and/or spend up to one year in jail.
People who are found to be responsible for a fire may also be required to pay all firefighting and other related costs.
