The Mayor of Kamloops suggests the city is still trying to come to terms with the transition from Queen Elizabeth II to King Charles III.

Noting that most living in Kamloops have never known a transition of the Crown in their lifetime, including those at City Hall, Ken Christian says they are taking their queues from the Lieutenant-Governor and Governor General’s offices.

“Here at City Hall, we have started the period of mourning by lowering our flags to half-staff, and they will remain that way until the Queen’s formal burial.”

Christian says pictures of Elizabeth will also be replaced with Charles, as per protocol requirements.

However, he says a book of condolence is not being considered.

Christian says while this is something that is allowed under the protocols, he suggests in today’s day in age, it’s likely better handled through electronic means.

“Remember a lot of these provisions were developed in the 1920s,” said Christian.  “I think now, with electronics, it would be better to collect these expressions of condolences on a national basis.”

Christian does say Kamloops has maintained close ties with the monarchy, with several visits by the royal family to the city through the years, something he says he expects will continue under the reign of King Charles III.
