The Kamloops Blazers have acquired 19-year-forward Ashton Ferster from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for an eighth round WHL Prospects Draft pick in 2025.
The 2003-born Ferster was drafted by the Tigers in the fourth round of the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft. He put up nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 66 games last season in Medicine Hat.
The six-foot-four right shot forward from Shellbrook, Sask. will add depth to the Blazers lineup as the team prepares to host the Memorial Cup next summer. His move comes as eight roster Blazers are at NHL camps this week.
That includes 20-year-olds Drew Englot (Colorado) and Daylan Kuefler (New York Islanders), 19-year-olds Caedan Bankier (Minnesota), Kyle Masters (Minnesota), Logan Stankoven and Matthew Seminoff (both Dallas), 18-year-olds Fraser Minten (Toronto), and Dylan Ernst (Carolina).
Four additional Blazers from the 2021-22 roster – Dylan Garand (New York Rangers), Quinn Schmiemann (Vancouver), Luke Toporowski (Boston), and Viktor Persson (Vancouver) – are also at NHL camps this week. Of that, only Garand is eligible to return to the Blazers as an overage players, though he has hinted as turning pro.
With the addition of Ferster, the Blazers now have 10 forwards, seven defensemen, and two goaltenders available for the final week of the WHL preseason.
They’re hosting Victoria this Wednesday, Sept. 14, Prince George on Friday, Sept. 16 and are on the road in Prince George on Sat. Sept. 17.
The 2022-23 regular season will begin in ten days, on Fri. Sept. 23, when the Portland Winterhawks come to Sandman Centre.
Blazers add a veteran forward with size 6’4. Cost is an 8th round pick, that could turn into a 7th. Ferster put up 19 points last season in Medicine Hat. Looks like a depth move. Blazers don’t have a lot of players around right now due to NHL camps. #Kamloops https://t.co/Vel2YpQkYb
