Kamloops firefighters say all’s well that ends well after a dog rescue in Peterson Creek Canyon yesterday.
Elizabeth Maki took to the Kamloops Dog Group on Facebook to share details of “the worst 90 minutes of her life.”
She was hiking with two-year-old springer spaniel in an area she isn’t very familiar with when the path “suddenly narrowed and, without warning, became very steep with a cliffside drop.”
“It happened so quickly [so] I got my leash out “just to be careful” and my pup suddenly bounded down the hill above us and just skidded straight to the path and off the cliff,” Maki wrote. “I watched it in slow motion…it was so awful.”
She estimates her dog fell over 30 feet and landed on a ledge, noting she couldn’t believe when she saw that her dog was still alive.
“The amazing angels who work for Kamloops Fire and Rescue came and got her out,” Maki said, noting the entire incident was “incredibly traumatic.”
In a facebook post this morning, KFR confirming that its crews performed a rope rescue to bring the dog back to safety.
“We’re sure she’ll be treading carefully on her next hike (maybe a few days to recover from her traumatic experience first, though),” KFR said.
Maki says her dog was taken to Kamloops Veterinary Clinic, where it was given a full check-up, x-rays, an ultrasound, and blood tests within 15 minutes.
“I can’t believe she is still alive and it looks like no breaks or internal damage, just lots of cuts and abrasions,” she said.
“I’m definitely still processing everything but just wanted to share because there was almost no warning of how treacherous the paths suddenly became.”
