A lot of discussions have been raised about the future of Logan Lake, once the copper is gone from the Highland Valley Copper Mine.
It comes as Logan Lake held its first inaugural meeting with the new council last week, the same time Teck Resources held its community session on its 2040 plan.,
Logan Lake Mayor Robin Smith says there have been discussions about Logan Lake’s environmental and ecological relationship with Teck.
“We have done a lot of work in the area of reclamation up in Logan Lake, they have been doing that for a long time on the mine site, so I think there are definitely some lessons to be learned in terms of education through that.”
Over the next 10 to 15 years, Smith says they are hoping to expand on a program between Logan Lake, BCIT, and Teck, doing work to restore the wetlands into a filtration system for water going into the lake.
She says they also want to further forestry reclamation during that time.
Additionally, Smith says they want to continue building and promoting outdoor tourism in their community, including fishing, hunting, camping, and ATV recreation.
She says this is because of the ideal environmental landscape of Logan Lake.
We’ve been well known for our trail systems around here for a really long time; well known for hunting and fishing and all of those sorts of ATV, recreation. We’re kind of at the core of kind of where that happens in this area.” she said.
“We’ve been doing a lot of work at our campground and then with the Synergy golf course being connected, we’ve been working on promoting that through our campground as well to kind of get people out camping and golfing.”
On top of that, Smith says they want to highlight Indigenous culture throughout the trail systems, which is something they have been working on.
“The Lower Nicola Indian Band did some signage along our trail system out to Mimi Falls, so there is some Indigenous education out there along that trail system, which I think is very valuable too.”
While a lot of work has already been completed, Smith says they will continue to plan and learn new opportunities and ideas for the future of the community.
