After being forced to mark the solemn occasion with muted commemorations due to the pandemic, hundreds turned out in Riverside Park on Friday morning to mark Remembrance Day.

Under cool, but calm conditions, the event — hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion’s Kamloops Branch — saw a return to the traditional commemorations, including wreath laying by various members of the armed services, veterans’ organizations and government officials.

The event also included a fly-by from Canadian Airforce jets from 419 Squadron out of Cold Lake, Alberta.
This year’s event marked a couple of firsts, including the inaugural wreath laying on behalf of the City of Kamloops by new Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson.

It also saw the singing of “God Save the King” for a Remembrance Day ceremony in Kamloops for the first time since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II earlier this year.
