UPDATE 4:45 p.m. – Kamloops RCMP say a 35-year-old man was arrested during last night’s emergency rescue of a paraglider above Sun Rivers.
Police say the man was arrested for allegedly interfering with the Search and Rescue Team by climbing to the peak of Mt. Paul, where he was “belligerent and abusive” towards the rescue personnel.
Kamloops RCMP spokesperson, Cpl. Crystal Evelyn, says the unidentified man was released without charges, noting the investigation into the incident is on-going.
ORIGINAL – An injured paraglider who crashed into a mountainside high above Sun Rivers had to be rescued by air crews from a CFB Comox last night.
A spokesperson with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Victoria told NL News that the Cormorant helicopter was dispatched from Vancouver Island due to concerns about patient safety after the paraglider hit a cliff base and signalled for help.
The helicopter was on scene around 9 p.m. last night, with the patient was eventually taken to Kamloops Airport where a waiting ambulance took them to Royal Inland Hospital around 1:15 a.m. Monday.
Kamloops Search and Rescue crews were also called out by RCMP to what they called “a very technical rescue” last night.
Initial reports were that a hiker was stranded after he fell abut 20 metres from a cliff, though when search crews got to the area, they discovered it was a paraglider who had been calling for help.
“KSAR got to the scene and hiked to the top with rescue equipment,” they said, in a post on Facebook, noting all KSAR teams were back home around 4.30 a.m. “After assessing the situation, we [sent] out a call for help to Canadian Forces Base Comox.”
There is no word on the condition of the injured paraglider.
