UPDATE 3:50 p.m. – RCMP say one person is dead after a crash involving two semi-trucks on Highway 5 near McLure.
BC Highway Patrol spokesperson, Constable James Ward says one other person was taken to hospital after the crash which happened around noon Thursday.
“I don’t know the direction of travel but one semi appears to have jackknifed and struck another semi,” Ward told NL News. “The occupant of the semi that was struck has passed away from their injury.”
A photo from the scene posted to social media shows one of the semis – which was carrying steel beams – was in the ditch.
Ward says at this time there is no indication of any criminality as a contributing factor though he notes the investigation, which is being led by the BC Highway Patrol, is still in the early stages.
“The causal factors are not known yet,” he said. “I know the roads were slippery at the time of the collision.”
The highway – which is still closed in both directions – is not expected to open until 8 p.m. this evening.
