B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating after a woman was seriously injured after spending the night in the Kamloops RCMP detachment cells.
In a news release, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) says the incident began around 11:35 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 when police were called to a reported disturbance at a house on McGill Road in Sahali.
“When police arrived, they located a woman who was reported to have been involved in the disturbance nearby,” the IIO said in the release, citing information from Kamloops RCMP. “The woman was arrested and lodged in Kamloops RCMP detachment cells.”
They say the next morning, Feb. 5, the woman complained of an injury. She was taken to hospital for treatment, where her injuries were determined to be serious, leading to the IIO investigation.
“The IIO has commenced an investigation, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm when the injury occurred and what role, if any, police may have played in that injury,” the statement added.
Anyone with information or video footage of the incident is asked to contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the online contact form.
