The new leader of the BC Liberal party is against the provincial government being in the legal marijuana business.
Andrew Wilkinson says it is strange to have the government selling both alcohol and marijuana considering the well documented health impacts of both.
Wilkinson says the government should be a regulator cracking down on marijuana retailers for breaking the law not an enabler of a “troublesome” product.
“You know we know about alcoholism. We know about addiction. We know about the potential for marijuana to trigger psychosis and to cause brain injury to young children. My view is this stuff may be lawful on July 1st but the government should not be in the business of selling it.”
The province has announced the Liquor Control Board will run a series of stand alone legal cannabis businesses alongside private retailers.
