With Kamloops City Hall well past it’s prime, Mayor Ken Christian had raised the possibility of working with BCLC as an option to replace the building.
But with no new BCLC Headquarters coming to the Tournament Capital, that idea is pretty much dead.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, Councillor Mike O’Reilly wouldn’t speculate where a new City Hall could go, or if we need one.
“I think we need to have the numbers come back,” he said. “I mean the options are that building is going to need tens of millions of dollars of money put into it, or have a new city hall built.”
He noted it’s important that City Council has all the information about the quality of all their assets before making decisions about any repairs or replacement.
“The Sandman Centre, that’s pushing 25 years,” noted O’Reilly. “The Tournament Capital Centre and the pool that was built, these are all things that are on the books and they seem like new facilities but really they’re not.”
When you look as far back as Memorial Arena, pushing almost 80 years old. The things we need to know before making financial decisions is the quality of our buildings and assets.”
The need to replace the City Hall is not urgent, and O’Reilly notes it could be a future council that has to make that decision.
