The province is working to replace bridges in the Cherry Creek area that were wiped out by flooding last year.
Quite a bit of work has been done on Greenstone Road, and TNRD Area Director Ronaye Elliott says things are progressing better than officials had hoped for.
“Certainly we’ve got some bags out with some sand for people to get started so that they can actually put some stuff on the creek before the creek comes roaring through their property,” she said.
“We have a hydrologist working with folks on the creek, hoping that everybody will be happy with that and hopefully that there will be no more flooding of the homes.”
She adds work on Rodeo Drive is also underway, while work is also being done on Gardi Road, where the creek runs under the Trans Canada Highway, to prevent any potential for highway washouts.
“I’m hoping that all of this work is certainly going to be a help for May,” Elliott added. “As a general rule, if it rains in April, it’ll flood in May.”
Elliott says to her knowledge bridge work on Beaton Road that also washed out, might be on hold for the time being, but she thinks it will likely go ahead next year.
“We’ve already done that lobbying and I don’t think that we require to do a lot more,” said Elliott. “It’s just that [the province’s] financial year is coming to an end, and I imagine it’s in next year’s budget for them.”
Area director Ronaye Elliott previously estimated the work would cost several million dollars.
