The Paramount Theatre building in downtown Kamloops has been sold to Kelson Group.
It’s currently being run as a Landmark movie theatre, but that will come to an end on April 17.
Kelson Group Vice President of Operations Jason Fawcett says they are hoping to find an operator for the theatre moving forward.
“Reopen it after Landmark closes and operate it for at least the next few years,” he said.
“The theatre is older and it’s life is probably not indefinite and it could be a development site in the future but short to medium term, we’re certainly thinking that if we can find an operator, we would hope the theatre would reopen.”
As for the future, Fawcett says there will be some sort of an announcement next week.
“We can’t disclose who we’ve been talking to,” he added. “We hope to have an announcement next week and ask that the community hold on for a few more days and another week.”
“There’s active discussions [going on].”
As for an investment into the 64-year old building, Jason Fawcett says ‘stay tuned’.
“We’re going to be looking at that as we go with the new operator, provided we can come to an agreement on that,” Fawcett said.
“Then it’s going to be getting it up and running again, and then we’ll have to see what we’re going to have to do to the theatre to either invest in it for the long run or if it’s not viable, then probably, it has run its course.”
The theatre has been home to the Kamloops Film Festival since they began in 1997.
