There’s been no discussions on whether there will be a cap on the number of cannabis stores in Sun Peaks.
Two proposals have gone before Sun Peaks council, who will consider all the applications on a case by case basis.
Councillor Mario Pozza says a number of councillors think the market will dictate how many stores open up in Sun Peaks.
“We have some general guidelines that you’re only allowed to have a cannabis retail store within X number of metres of a schools and recreational facilities and the such,” he said.
That said, because Sun Peaks is not a very large community, Pozza believes there might not be too many potential locations that fit in all the zoning requirements.
“If you get to the village core, you are within 150 to 200 metres of a school or a recreational facility,” he added.
“The number of locations that you can have to some extent, dictate the number of stores and as well not having stores that are side by side.”
Pozza says he knows of several people interested in opening cannabis stores in Sun Peaks.
“Not necessarily the proponents that have come forward,” he told Radio NL. “I understand the mayor has received a couple of notes with people who are not necessarily in favour of opening the store.”
“I suspect that we’ll get some people that are definitely in favour of opening the stores. That’s the joy of having the public hearings. Let’s get that input.”
There’s no date set yet for the public hearing on the proposed cannabis stores in Sun Peaks.
Council hopes to have the hearing on both stores at the same time.
