Kamloops RCMP and the city of Kamloops are urging drivers to be careful when travelling through construction zones.
A joint public statement from both agencies says they understand that road work projects have an impact on drivers and pedestrians across the city.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says there are several construction zones on Kamloops streets, and many of them are controlled by flaggers.
“For proper flow of traffic and for the safety of flaggers and other vehicles, it’s really important that all drivers obey the flaggers and really show patience,” she said.
Shelkie says drivers sometimes get frustrated in these construction zones, but it’s not common to see a flagger get hit by a vehicle.
“Probably they are more verbally harassed than anything, which is unfortunate as well,” Shelkie added. “They are just doing their job to keep the road safe, and it’s just really important that people obey what they are doing and show patience.”
Depending on the situation, she says a driver can face a number of penalties ranging from a criminal code charge to a violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act if the hit a flagger who is on the job.
A woman was struck by a driver in the Valleyview area yesterday morning, and suffered minor injuries.
