The Kamloops Thompson School District is taking a wait and see approach on the issue of the $10 a day childcare plan.
School Board Chair Kathleen Karpuk says she met with Sharon Gregson, a longtime advocate of the program, but felt there were too many unanswered questions.
“It’s a really complicated issue. Part of the ask with $10 a day daycare is [for] the Ministry of Education take that over completely, all childcare,” Karpuk said. “That’s a pretty big prospect.”
“In order for us to take a stance on it, we’d have to ask our staff to do a pretty in-depth report for us, right now they are pretty busy with a couple of other project.”
Karpuk says the board will see what direction the provincial government takes on this very complicated issue before issuing any direction to staff.
“It’s just something that is so big that its just got a lot of ins and outs to it. It’s quite complicated, so we don’t really want to take too much staff time around it when we’d like to sort of see where the government is going to go in it,” she added.
Gregson, who was in the city last week, convinced Kamloops City Council to throw its support behind the $10 a day childcare model, becoming the 56th local government to do so.
