The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is concerned that a rock slide might be blocking a remote part of the Fraser River.
A rock slide happened yesterday at an area west of Clinton and north of the Big Bar Berry. DFO communications adviser Lara Sloan tells NL News the slide happened at an area where the river is narrow and access is limited, and officials aren’t sure if the river is being blocked there or not.
Sloan says the rock slide may impact returning salmon, and says officials are doing an overflight survey of the slide site today. The DFO also says it is working with First Nations and provincial partners to determine next steps once it determines “the extent of the blockage.”
More to come.
We are working with our provincial partners and local First Nations to determine next steps.
