The city of Kamloops says it is working with Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc after there were four fires on the reserve in the past 24 hours.
One of those fires was early this morning, with crews from both the City and Tk’emlúps responding around 3:37 a.m.
In a statement, the City says Kamloops Fire had two engines, two bush trucks, and one water tender respond to fight the fires, while TteS had two 1,000 gallon water trailers, one front-end loader, one excavator and five members from the Natural Resource department.
“The fires pose no danger to the public, [however] TteS and KFR are concerned about the fires as they have been deemed suspicious in nature,” the statement said. “TteS Kúkpi7 Rosanne Casimir and Kamloops Fire Chief Steve Robinson have been in contact and will be meeting with RCMP to try to understand how best to prevent future fires.”
Earlier today, Kamloops Fire Platoon Captain Jim Gorman told NL News it was too early to speculate if this morning’s fire was deliberately set.
Another fire broke out late yesterday afternoon around 5:00 p.m., with the other two happened overnight overnight, though there’s no indication of any significant damage. There was another fire last Wednesday off Chilcotin Road on Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc, though crews made quick work of it as well.
“TteS and KFR are committed to working together to ensure the safety of all residents,” the City statement added.
