The ‘Run for Ryan’ will be returning to the slopes of Sun Peaks Resort, Thursday, Feb. 17, on what will be the four year anniversary of the disappearance of Ryan Shtuka.
Sun Peaks Resort Chief Marketing Officer, Aidan Kelly, tells NL News he’s happy to see the group ski run return after COVID-19 and travel restrictions forced last year’s edition to be cancelled.
“It was obviously important for us to bring it back, I think, mostly as a show of support for the family,” he said.
“The family likes to travel here multiple times a year and we keep in close contact with them and this is just a nice touch and a nice way to keep this top of mind and also show the family support while they are with us in resort at the same time.”
Kelly says community members and visitors to Sun Peaks are all able to take part in the event, which starts at 3 p.m.
“We meet at the top of the Sunburst Express Chairlift and then ski the 5 mile ski run together. We then we take the Platter lift up and then at the top, we have a small outdoor gathering where we share a few stories and have some conversation, and a nice cup of hot chocolate in the snow.”
“We have some of our management team that will come out and join and some of the local community that have strong connections to Ryan’s family. It is not a very large scale event but I think its well received and I think it is quite important to make sure that we are showing that sign of support on a regular basis.”
Ryan Shtuka was last leaving a house party on Burfield Drive in Sun Peaks on February 17, 2018.
Several extensive searches since that time have all been unsuccessful.
