The BC Highway Patrol is asking people who witnessed a head-on crash between two semi-trucks on Highway 97 near Monte Creek last Monday to reach out if they haven’t already.
Mounties say they are continuing to investigate the Feb. 12 crash near Hanna Road that killed the driver of one of the semis, and sent the other hospital for assessment.
Police say their investigation has revealed that one of the semis failed to negotiate a curve on the highway and crossed the centre median into the path of the other vehicle. At this time, its not clear which semi crossed the centre median.
“Our collision reconstructionist report will take months to complete, so we won’t have any answers as to what exactly occurred until then,” BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Melissa Jongema told Radio NL.
“The file will continue to be under investigation [with more information to come if] we receive an update such as if or when charges are forwarded.”
In a post on Facebook, Armstrong based Reimer Bros. trucking identified the driver who was killed as Mike Beernaerts, who had been with the company for the past five months.
“Mike tragically lost his life on the night of Monday. Mike’s infectious smile and laughter brightened our days. Not only was he an exceptional trucker, but he was also a remarkable human being.”
“Everyone at Reimer Bros can attest to the fact that Mike’s presence will be deeply missed,” the post said. “In losing him, we have lost not just a great driver, but a great man. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew him, worked alongside him, and his family during this difficult time.”
People who witnessed the crash, as well as those with information or video of either semi leading up to and after the crash, are being told to contact the BC Highway Patrol – Kamloops office at 250-828-3111, Extension 2.
