The mayor of Kamloops says Domtar has made big strides in dealing with odour coming from its Mission Flats facility.
Ken Christian notes the company is claiming a 70-percent reduction in odour emissions over the last seven years.
“They’ve invested $1-million in an electrostatic precipitator to remove some of the particulate and another $2.5-million in terms of reducing sulfur dioxide emissions,” Christian said on the Woodford Show.
“They had data to show that those levels had gone down.”
That said Christian notes there has been a slight increase in complaints when odour emissions waft over the city.
“I think that’s a function that we’re not used to always smelling the pulp mill and when we do now, people get on the phones and report it,” he said.
“That’s a good thing because I think the company is very earnest in their desire to be a good corporate citizen to work alongside with Kamloops residents.”
