Six months into operations at the Paramount Theatre downtown, the Kamloops Film Society is still finding its feet.
Executive Director Dusan Magdolen says it’s been a bit of a roller coaster, but overall it has been a positive experience for the society.
“Landmark Cinemas didn’t leave because there was too much money to be made. The business wasn’t doing well for them,” he said. “For us to be surviving in our first year is a success and we’re still leading into what is our tent pole which is the film festival. So that’s when we’ll be able to sort of tell how that first year went.”
He says the Society is still looking to see what works best for them at Paramount Theatre.
“December has been a bit slower, October and November were busier. The retro films have been doing really well for us, and it seems to be something in the market that wasn’t available before,” he said.
“In general, free family flicks have been doing great. You know there’s a lot going on for people.”
As for a grand opening that was to happen this past fall, Magdolen says they haven’t forgotten about it.
“But it was sort of the brain child of the board. I think they had hoped that I would sort of do that, but it’s just been crazy as far as my time goes,” Magdolen added.
“So anything that wasn’t essential, especially in that fall time period didn’t get done. There’s only so many hours in the day and so many things we can do.”
He says that grand opening may now happen next fall, once the society has a full year of operations under their belt.
