As work progresses on the Tranquille Road sanitary main project, the city doesn’t expect traffic impacts to be as significant like it was with the Victoria Street West project last year.
However, Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell says while businesses are open, people should think about taking alternate routes if you’re heading towards the airport, for instance.
“We’ll see how things go. It will be an ongoing plan. You know we’ve got the same communications plan on this project and all our major projects,” he told NL News. “We’re going to be out in front of weekly planning with the contractor and communicating with the public and making adjustments as necessary.”
Crundwell says while there will be two lanes of traffic through the construction zone at all times, there may be the odd time with a single lane of alternating traffic.
“[Especially] by the Brock Shopping Centre where it merges down to two lanes,” he added. “But I mean there is less traffic volume, and we’ve got a much wider roadway, and quite a few more lanes than a project like West Victoria Street, and there’s also a lot more options to go around Tranquille.”
Those other options include Parkcrest Avenue and Ord Road. Work on the Tranquille project was expected to start in March, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Crundwell says work is now expected to be completed in summer 2021, instead of the anticipated November 2020 completion date.
