Should there be street lights along Highway 5A between Hugh Allan Drive and Rogers Way? Kamloops city staff say that topic has come up from time to time.
Speaking to NL News on Tuesday morning, city manager David Trawin says it’s considered a rural road, and acknowledges the city is responsible for the cost of maintenance and any upgrades.
He says there could be recommendations that come out after Monday night’s fatal crash along that stretch of highway.
“We look at accident statistics. We do have a traffic advisory commission which is made up of ICBC, the RCMP, city staff, and independent people who are technical in the business. We do review accident stats in certain areas, which helps us do our planning on how we move forward,” he says.
“Street lighting itself has come up the odd time, here and there. We look at it as a rural road, with wider shoulders, and people act accordingly on that. Obviously, again, we’ll wait and see where this comes out. But, again, we’ve had accidents throughout the city with conflicts between pedestrians and cars.”
Trawin says there is a local Traffic Advisory Committee, made up of city staff and ICBC staff, as well as RCMP and independent members.
He says his heart goes out to the woman killed and to the driver who hit her in Monday’s crash.
