There will be more road paving work taking place on Columbia Street later this month between 6th Avenue and the Valleyview interchange.
Streets Manager Glen Farrow says work will start on September 28, and there will be some traffic impacts – including the occasional road closure – for about a week.
“The last week of September, first week of October, there will definitely be some challenges with traffic through that corridor. We might extend it to the next week, but generally work like this is pretty straightforward,” he told NL News. “We’re not replacing any water, sewer, storm underground. It is strictly a paving project.”
Farrow says there will also not be any on-street parking available through the construction zone on Columbia Street while this work is underway.
“We will be encouraging people to use alternative routes,” he added. “It’s not 3rd and Columbia so the traffic is not as bad as there, and not impacting the 6th Avenue intersection will also be a benefit. We will be just a little east of that particular intersection.”
The total project will cost about $250,000, Farrow says, noting the road is in need of repairs.
“If we continue east from 6th you’ll notice where the asphalt is definitely deteriorating, so we need to get in there and make some repairs,” Farrow added. “A lot of complaints through that section with the amount of potholes that continue to develop between 6th and 13th in particular.”
Meanwhile, roadwork at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Columbia Street – which started on September 8 – is expected to wrap up by Friday.
