The victims of a fatal two vehicle crash near Tappen earlier this month have been identified in an online fundraiser as Mike and Robin Martel.
The couple were killed when the SUV they were in crashed head on with a semi at Highway 1 and Kirkpatrick Road, just before 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 2. The adults were killed at the scene while their two children – Marverick, 8, and Bailee Jo, 5, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
“The sudden death of Mike and Robin is heartbreaking news to their families and friends,” Mike’s cousin Nadine Bouchard said in the online GoFundMe post.
“This account is set up to help with anything the children need while being cared for by the loving staff at BC Children’s Hospital. Any extra will be placed in trust for the children’s future.”
The Martels were involved with the Whalley Little League and the organization took to the facebook to mourn their loss while drumming up support for the two children.
It revealed that Maverick has already had multiple surgeries after he fractured both femurs and crushed his hand. They also say Bailee Jo underwent surgery to fuse her neck and to repair fractures in her lower leg and wrist.
Both children are reportedly conscious and on the road to recovery, the post said, though they will need long-term medical attention, physical rehab and counselling.
“Fortunately, their Aunt and Grandmother have been able to come from Saskatchewan to be with them,” the facebook post from the Whalley Little League said. “Aunt Lalayne and their small extended family will take care of them through their recovery and then will raise them as their own. It is going to be a long road to recovery.”
“When they are able, they will join their small extended family in Northern Saskatchewan.”
As of publishing, the fundraiser had raised $65,875 of its $75,000 goal.
